Once bought, many wonder what to plant inside them, display them at home as ornaments or on the balcony as real vases?
Caltagirone Moor’s heads
Legend has it that around the year 1100, a beautiful Sicilian girl, feeling betrayed by her lover, a young and handsome Moor, decided to cut off his head, plant basil on it and display it on the balcony.
A story of passion with a grotesque ending, to say the least.
True or not, this story has animated the imagination and creative inspiration of many Sicilian artists who, with their ceramic works, have made the Moor’s Heads a true emblem of Sicily.
So if you want to follow tradition you should plant some basil in it, considered at the time a royal plant, “the herb of sovereigns”.
Otherwise you can indulge yourself with floral compositions, ornamental plants, or simply leave them as they are, displayed as art objects full of charm and mystery.
