It all began during the Norman period, following the visit of the Pope of the time to the Martorana convent.
The nuns were quite sad because the trees in their garden were now bare, due to the harvest.
They wanted to make a good impression and show the garden in all its splendour and so they decided to make the fruit by hand.
They mixed almond flour and sugar and shaped small fruits which they then coloured and placed on the trees.
